This dome/sarcophagus should have been replaced in the 1990s and is now scheduled for 2007-2009 replacement. If the current dome fails we could see a bigger radioation leak than what we experienced when Chernobyl blew its top back in 1986.
Speaking of which, did you know there is a monument in Ukraine depicting firemen working, with the text "To save the world" - [They died saving the world] Which according to some experts they did, as less than 5% of the radioation leaked out, thanks to the quick and selfless (in some cases) actions by the thousands involved in putting out the fire and entombing the reactor.
Edit: But I wonder how much support their relatives have gotten since, or how well they are remembered around the world, as heroes. Now they are all but forgotten. As both their sacrifice and the incident that caused it is errodet from memory, since we are more important in who slept with whom on the "Robinsons Isle" tv-show, or which of the girls looks best in "Big Brother".
And... Where did critical/investigative journalism go, or is it still there but we are unable to see it, as we are to expectant of flashy headlines proclaiming SEX, DEATH, VIOLENCE and WAR bigger and bigger fonts. They call those big black fonts "WAR TYPES" (Krigstyper) here in Norway.. I wonder what they will use when a 'real war' breaks out... or will peopel care at all...
I can see the irony in it already: A family, well, actually all the families in the block are sitting in the living room watching the TV - The religious altar of worship for the late 20th and the 21st century - which has a direct freed from "coallition forces" broadcast through CNN [aka: The news the way Turner wants you to see them - localized as to best control the populace] watching the nose-cam from a Cluster-bomb on its descent upon the enemies... *boom it explodes* on the target and millions of viewers can see the building blow up in a fiery explosion to match the biggest blockbusters from Hollywood. However, the families in the building block, watching this, are watching no longer, as they were the ones bombed.
